Hospitality comes in all forms, sometimes simple and warm, other

times it is elaborate and luxurious. There are times in our lives,

each one has its ‘benefits’ and comforts, too.

 

My ex-sister in law, Linda, was such a special woman. She was so

kind and thoughtful. We had her up a few times for holidays, but

as she had invited us numerous times, we felt compelled to go her

direction- to Roanoke, Virginia. We were excited since we had at

the time six children, three of his and three of mine. Yet, we were

given a ‘vacation reprieve,’ while my parents were taking my two

girls and a boy, his other sister and her husband, were taking his

two boys and a girl. They were both heading in different directions

with the children, one to the far western part of Ohio for my parents

to where their ‘home camp site’ part of the Good Sam camping club,

and the other three were heading to a farm out by Johnstown, Ohio.

They were going to help pitch in with pigs and also, dunk in a spring

fed pond to wash the smell and dirt off, enjoying ‘country living.’

 

Linda had sent me a questionnaire; really!  Smiling right now at her

sweet questions, asking me to rate some of her favorite and practiced

dishes, letting her know which ones I would like her to prepare for

our meals. This way, she had thoughtfully and carefully planned all

the meals and had competed her shopping, too. Mike told me he loved

ALL of her home cooking, so not to worry about checking back with

him. She also asked in this fun and interesting quiz, what activities I

liked, what treats I enjoyed snacking on and other hospitable questions.

 

Upon our arrival, we found a lovely fruit basket in her guest room. It

had (at the time, I felt this way) ‘exotic’ fruits like starfruit and kiwi,

along with apples, pears and tangerines. I had told her I didn’t like

bananas, unless they are greenish, never any brown spots on them.

So, Mike who loved his bananas ripened, no such luck for him!

 

We had brought her a stone carved into an angel for her garden.

Linda was so thrilled and we felt we could not have brought her

a better gift. This is how a generous and caring hostess greets her

guests and makes them feel so welcome.

 

On our pillows, I had three Lindt dark chocolate balls. No, at this

time I had never tried them, but when asked which candy I liked in

my Easter basket (yes, this was a true question!) Linda found out I

liked the white chocolate bunnies, the dark chocolate covered coconut

eggs, and the milk chocolate maple eggs. I would switch with my two

brothers until I had the combination I enjoyed most.  (The second

night she put a Heath bar on my pillow and on and on, until we left

after a four day visit. Back to the plain old house, with the bustling

children there. Shoot!)

 

When we went into her newly furnished bathroom, she had placed

the exact color of towels she had seen in our own bathroom. I had

‘assigned’ Mike an olive green and I had lilac or lavender colored

towels at our house together. I had always felt if I ever had more

than one bathroom, I would decorate with a basket of violets and

those colors. Linda had bought a large bath towel, hand towel and

two wash cloths, in the colors from home.

 

As you can guess, we had delicious meals, went to many scenic

places, along with a beautiful mansion to eat our dinner at. It was

set off the road, quite a step back in history to the elegant antebellum

period of time. This is the period between the 1812 war and the Civil

war. I like to think of “Gone with the Wind,” when I reminisce about

this lovely place. The meal was delectable, with our being able to

choose one, two or three meats for our meal. My ex, Mike, being tall

and lanky, able to eat as much as he wanted order the three meats’

meal. Linda ordered pork and I ordered chicken. The other meat

was beef.  We had dressed up, full of expectation, which we were not

disappointed in this at all.

 

When I was growing up, my Grandmother Mattson, liked to make

desserts. Her German heritage helped to prepare yummy breakfasts.

We would usually have a simple meat, vegetable and sometimes a

bread or potato. My Grandfather had changed her into a Swedish

chef, for meals and a gourmet streusel, rum balls, Black Forest cherry

cake or German chocolate cake would be our reward for eating a

well prepared meal, but healthy for our lives. We still don’t prepare

our daily meals with many complicated recipes or sauces.

 

When we would arrive, my Grandmother would be given a gift,

my Mom called it her “hostess gift.” She emphasized respect, love

and never arriving at someone’s house, ’empty handed.’ Often, the

gift was flowers. Sometimes, it was a bouquet, often it was a potted

plant of lilies, tulips, or daffodils in the Spring, burgundy or golden

mums, if it were Autumn. Late summer, my Mom liked to pick out

sunflowers, along with asters. Sometimes, these could be found at

roadside tables, along the country back roads from Cleveland to the

town of Middletown, Ohio.

 

Mom often would give my Grandma a pretty tea towel, candy and

if she had baked cookies, those were stored in a tin for them to open

after we left. Once, my brothers got into that tin and boy! Did they

ever get in trouble!

 

When my parents retired the hospitality became less structured, it

was now Lake Erie casual dining experiences, find your beach towels

on the fence or in the linen closet. When they moved from the suburbs,

the antiques got shipped to an auction house, barely any were saved.

I was asked, but I had decided on Early American or Colonial period

having been raised in a Victorian style home, I was anxious to choose

a different way of decorating. Sometimes, I do wish I had saved some

of the special pieces, but then when I moved to my little apartment,

it would have been bittersweet parting at such a late date from them.

 

When we were on our way to my parents, we would use our landline

phone to call theirs. “Leaving now, see you in about 3 hours.” We were

not ones to carry on much conversation. Even now, when I call my Mom,

she immediately asks, “Is everything all right, Robin?” or “Are you okay,

dear?” (This works for all of us, since she and Dad named us all with “R”

in the beginning, it is quite a silly thing to hear her go through the names,

including my Dad’s, too.)

 

Upon leaving the last highway and getting onto Baumhart Road, our

labrador retriever mutt, Toby, would howl.  He knew the lake was out

there, wanted the window open to snort and sniff. He would walk on

top of people to get to the window, but usually even in the dead of

winter, we would ‘humor’ the good ol’ boy.

 

If it were Summer, my Dad would hear us honk about three times, as

we passed the Showse Park beach area. He would get up off his lounge

chair, go to the back of the house, grab these spongy things called,

“noodles” and usually for fun, had a Life Preserver over his shoulder.

This man was so ecstatic to have company, more than you would ever

know if you had been his friend at work or in the church we went to.

 

Dad would have either croquet set up or the net for badminton or

volleyball. If anyone mentioned a different preference, Dad was on

top of this, so excited to be able to play with the kids. You may have

read awhile back, my Dad gave up his childhood play time pursuits

at age 11, to start working to help pay rent and take care of his own

mother. His father had been in the war, was in Cincinnati Veteran’s

Hospital.  Being retired was like Heaven at the end of years of being

‘on top of things.’

 

The formal ‘bar’ my Dad had had, with all kinds of liquor, the “Old

Mr. Boston’s” book of bartender’s recipes and the side dishes of olives,

onions, cherries and orange slices were gone. The Beach retirement

life style meant you could grab a beer, pop, water or wine cooler from

the three full bags of iced up beverages in the huge coolers kept under

the picnic tables on the carport.

 

Food was sandwiches, available 24/7, with various delicatessen meats,

cheeses and condiments in the drawer of the refrigerator. If anyone

showed up who wished to get a frozen lemonade and make it in a

pitcher or stayed a few days and wished to make some Sun Tea,

all the ‘fixings’ were here. There were steaks, chops, salmon and

hamburgers in the freezer. If my brothers wanted to take the time

to fire up the gas grill and prepare them, all of us were overjoyed.

Otherwise, Mom and I would make potato and macaroni salad in

the early cool hours of the morning and were quite content with

nibbling on snacks, cookies and an occasional piece of meat or

cheese.

 

Relaxed dress code, shirt optional.

Wow, this was the simple and warm hospitality I had mentioned

in that first paragraph.

Unique December Facts

“The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”

The good news is December has been declared Bingo Celebration

Month! I used to love it when my family would play this, with

guests. Sometimes my cousins, sometimes neighbors, we would

be out on the picnic table with our chips and our Dad would be

the one to spin the wire caged wheel and pull out the wooden

balls with the letters, “B,I,N,G” or “O.”

Did you know this is an ‘ancient’ game? It has been around since

the 1500’s.

I used to love being the “Caller” for Bingo at the Arbors Nursing Home,

while my residents were always happy to call out, “Bingo!” The young

volunteers would run over and give them their quarter. When the whole

card got filled, we would start all over again. The reward for a filled card

was one dollar bill. This was a big exciting reward to the folks who lived

there.

 

On a much more solemn note, December 16, 1944 was the day the big

“Battle of the Bulge” was carried out.

 

The Official End of WWII was on December 31, 1946.

Peace on Earth, Good will to Men.

villages in France. Marseilles may have been its first place

of origin, with three kinds of fish and Provencal seasonings.)

(This would be the perfect day or excuse to make pancakes

references going back to Roman times. This is a very young

pig, which has a lot of collagen in its skin, hard to ‘crisp up,’

while it is considered a delicacy.)

(What is your favorite hard candy?

My Dad’s was either horehound or cinnamon drops.

Mom’s was butterscotch drops. My favorite flavor is found in

either the caramel flavored Nips or Werther’s candies.)

 

Dec. 20- National Fried Shrimp Day.

(This makes me think of Louisiana cooking with crawdads or

prawns. This would be prepared as Shrimp Creole. I enjoy

the butter sauce with garlic infusion:  Shrimp Scampi.)

 

Also on the 20th- National Sangria Day.

“Ole!”

(You probably already know this is my Mom’s favorite wine

to sip on at bedtime, using a small juice glass. I have a

Spanish toast on another post…)

Dec. 22- National Date Nut Bread.

 

Dec. 23- National Pfeffernuesse Day.

(This traditional German spice cookie covered with powdered

confectioner’s sugar is one that takes me back to my Grandma’s

kitchen. It reminds me of the flavors of gingerbread cookies.)

 

Dec. 24- National Feast of the Seven Fishes.

(This comes from Italy, which celebrates the Wait or Vigil for

the Baby Jesus, by serving fish from the Mediterranean Sea.)

 

Also, National Egg Nog Day.

(I like this use of nutmeg, heavy cream and Irish whiskey or

other alcohol. Mom likes the non-alcoholic milky drink from

United Dairy Farmers.)

 

Dec. 25- National Pumpkin Pie Day.

(Just in case you didn’t get enough of this holiday pie at

Thanksgiving.)

 

Dec. 26- National Candy Cane Day.

Dec. 27- National Fruit Cake Day.

 

Dec. 28- National Chocolate Candy Day.

(Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Easter also celebrate

this national holiday- just being ‘facetious.’)

 

Dec. 29- National Pepper Pot Soup Day.

(There are recipes for this Jamaican cuisine along

with one from Philadelphia.)

 

Dec. 30- National Bicarbonate of Soda Day,

(Thank you for this Baking Soda Day. I like to use this

special rising ingredient in many baked goods, but can

taste it the most in homemade biscuits.)

(Say a toast to “Auld Lang Syne”  and Happy New Year, 2015!)

look up the ones I did not know where the foods originated in. If

Friday’s Fun Day

Happy celebrating an Early St. Patrick’s Day!

Several of my coworkers were heading out of

work, since today is our ‘half’ day, to buy

some green beer. They said, “Come on, Robin!”

No, I just could not do it! Now, I would have

said, “Yes!” to green eggs and bacon, or green

pancakes!

Anyway, while we are on the subject of drinking,

I thought I would share one of those humorous

forwards that land in my emails! I am actually

going to type it in, since you never know what

may be attached to this! I changed a few words

so no plagiarism lawsuits will ensue! Ha Ha!

Escape to the Islands!

While walking into our distribution center this morning,

I noted that there were several of the “kids” (anyone under

30) in their shorts and their tank tops. They had sweatshirts

that zipped up over this attire. While we were doing our

morning exercises, they were already peeling those off! Then,

in my work zone, that I was assigned to work, I found that

someone on ‘nights’ had turned on the fans! They were blowing

profusely! Brrr!

Not even on the ‘low’ level!

Come on, everyone! I have a sense of humor about it,

once I turn off the fans and start working… Then,

on the way to break, I saw Native American Ted, he

was wearing a brightly colored tropical shirt. All

of this ‘fun and carefree’ attire made me start to

hum the words to the Beach Boys’ song, “Kokomo.”

“Aruba… Jamaica, ooh, I wanna take ya…Bermuda…”

This song was released in 1988 timed for the movie

release of Tom Cruise’s “Cocktail.” I had to laugh

when I accidentally whispered the words too loudly

and Darryl asked me if I were going to travel to

all of those islands! Guess what? There are people

who do just that!

Here are my favorite islands, some I have been to

and some I have YET to go visit the delightful

scenery. Nallorca, (in the Mediterranean) yes, I have

been blessed as a teenager to have that thrown into

our Spanish Club trip… Bahamas, Hawaii, Aldives,

Puerto Rico, the Florida Keys and Aruba are on my new

islands’ tour bucket list!

Describing an idyllic set of crescent shaped islands down

in Florida will come a little more easily than the teens’

island cruise in the Mediterranean Sea. My ‘newer, fresher’

memories are since I was a fully grown adult when we went to

‘play’ down there!

If you wish to travel there, going in the fall will help your

ability to find a place to stay. You may drive to Ft. Meyer’s

Beach and stay there for less money and fine accommodations.

Staying on Sanibel Island was satisfyingly self-indulgent!

You will find the coconut palms, migratory birds and other

wonderful island ‘elements’ on Sanibel or Captiva Islands.

I will start with looking for sea shells and which beaches

were the best to see them. It is a great place to exercise,

by bending and squatting to pick up shells. Also, you may

rent bicycles to further explore the islands.

There is nothing better, (almost) than digging one’s toes

into cool, wet sand on a hot day. As you will find warm,

clean, fine white sand along these beaches it is easy to

spot the larger shells particularly. The two beaches I was

fortunate to rest, on my behind in the sand, on and search

fervently for shells to take home were on the mid-Island

beach called “Bowman’s Beach” and on the eastern point,

“Lighthouse Beach.” It is also a immeasurable pleasure to

have a towel, book and hat with a wide brim to provide

welcome shade on your book you may wish to read and revel

in the atmosphere, too.

In the tidal pools and bright blue water with azure skies,

sometimes not a cloud to be found… you may find this list

of shells:

Alphabet cones of brown and white with spots.

Tellins of rosy pink and peachy colors.

Scallops of patchy calico patterns, my favorites are a mix

of caramel, brown and white. These have ridges on them.

Conch shells are those ones that look like horns, you can

hear the ocean in them the best!

Angel wings, try to find some pairs. I have a card with 20

of these sets glued on it, that my Grandmother Mattson took

days to collect and my Grandfather wrapped first in tissue,

then with bubble wrap and finally brown paper-packaged with

my name and address when I was in third grade. You bet, I

took that pretty card with “shell butterflies” to school to

show off! (Every time I see special shells, I remember their

little trailer, close to Clearwater Beach. I have wonderful

memories of the Gulf side of Florida. The ocean is more of

a New England memory, for me…)

Lightning whelks are grey, silvery on the inside and have some

different patterns, all swirly and unique.

There are the occasional jelly fish, watch out, crabs,

not to eat! You can purchase them at restaurants and/or

enjoy the fresh seafood there!

With the sea gulls flying and possible dolphin sightings,

this is a wonderful place filled with nature. Sunsets with

cool, iced drinks that feature little umbrellas and fruity

‘ka-bobs’ on long skewers or a simple, chilled glass of your

favorite beer (or wine cooler) are such awesome sources of

rejuvenation. Well, at least I always feel younger, while

sipping one of these! Smile!

Each little tiki bar will have the tunes of the Beach Boys,

Barry Manilow, Bruno Mars or Jimmy Buffett playing, sometimes

you may develop an ear “worm” from listening to them! A newer

“Island Song,” by the Zac Brown Band (August, 2012) is one of

my new favorites! My old favorite one, “Island Girl,” sung by

Elton John (released in 1975) can just get me up and dancing,

slowly in the arms of a stranger… My mind wanders off…

Here is a practical list of conditions and suggestions to find

more shells (wherever you are vacationing!)

1. Usually one hour before to one hour after low tide. You

will need to check local tide charts.

2. Weather factors that all increase your chances for more

shells, are a) cold spells, b) storms, and c) new or full moons.

3. Another fantastic adventure to find sea shells, is to go

snorkeling! See the bottom of the ocean, the sea life, unique

fish and gaze upon fresh, living shells. Of course, your

common sense will tell you it is illegal to take a living

shell. It will stink on your way home, if you accidentally

found one inhabited.

The two kinds of birds that are less likely to be found in

Ohio, for example, are white pelicans and cormorants. We

see blue and white herons, along with egrets up on Lake

Erie and around Alum Creek, too. On my good friend, Bill’s

Mill Street you can look down from the bridge and see

a couple of herons with their feet in the cold Mills Creek,

these days!

If you are a painter, you may wish to bring a portable easel

or if a sketcher, you may wish to bring an artist’s pad of

paper (sketch book) or if your craft is writing, take your

journal. Although, you ‘are on vacation,’ it doesn’t mean

you cannot practice your ‘art’ or ‘craft!’

Local museums and shops on islands are also places you may

find more than souvenirs. You may wish to bring more exotic

items, like shells that have been made into wares, such

as jewelry: necklaces, bracelets for wrist and ankles

and earrings, too. I once brought a gorgeous shell mobile

home and hung it over my baby’s window sill. It brought her

many smiles, induced delighted expressions and little sounds

that were like ‘chortles.’ Rare shells you may find in the

gift shops are junonias shells and pointy horn snails.

If you are very adventurous, there are many air sports and

water sports to engage in. Boating and para-sailing come to

mind. Hang-gliding and speedboats may put a little zip into

your step, once you come down from the ‘high’ of exhilaration

you will experience.

I enjoy napping on the beach, but try to remember to slather

extra sunscreen with high SPF all over, even on your ears and

the tops of your feet! I had an ex who adored going back to

the motel or hotel, and taking a nap. Sometimes while he

was just waking up, he may have wished for some ‘afternoon

delight,’ too. I may not reveal if this was also, my idea

of romance, too!

The Next Great Excuse to Party On! February 2, 2014

I have made a fairly comprehensive list of all the

delicious choices to have at a smorgasbord or potluck

event! I hope you will consider hiring a teenager to

supervise the younger children, purchasing juices in

non-staining colors like white grape juice or apple

juice, other finger foods that are not on the following

list to serve, if you allow children to tag along with

their adult parents.

I also encourage to plan ahead and have two areas, if

possible, to have the Super Bowl football game playing.

One, of course, will be for the diehard fans that don’t

like too much commentary, chatting or just aimless

conversation! I am a big fan of the commercials, the

sometimes great but always entertaining Half Time Show.

I am not so much of a follower of the blow by blow football

plays, so I would hang out with the aimless conversers,

and don’t lecture me, but usually the women who are in this

group!

You can make a menu and divide these choices up or you can

contemplate the audience of guests, check your budget and

figure what is best for all out of these scrumptious choices!

1. Guacamole dip and tortilla chips. I love black bean tortilla

chips! I also like hummus… there are many dips that are natural

and have elements of healthy ingredients to include. Veggies to

dip in these could also be set out.

2. Jalapeno poppers. I love the smell of these, for some reason

these spicy little things get my mouth salivating, when I smell

them baking in the oven.

3. A huge submarine sandwich, cut into 3-4″ slices. This can

include all sorts of deli meats, cheeses, vegetables and a

sprinkle of Italian dressing. Mmmmm…!

4. Pizzas! Endless choices here.

5. A crock pot of chili can be served with side toppings,

such as sour cream, grated cheeses, chives or onions, and

tortilla or Frito chips. I also think an inexpensive side

can be a pan of hot dogs and hot dog buns.

6. Baked Potato Skins. Again, some of the side toppings

used in the chili suggestions can be used, along with

bacon bits and peppers.

7. Meatballs in tomato sauce or barbecue sauce

or Small wieners in a chili/grape jelly mix prepared

ahead in a crock pot. Another hamburger possibility,

but is kind of messy, is sloppy joes.

8. Deviled Eggs. This is sometime, in some areas,

a tradition for any and all family/friends’ gatherings.

9. Bacon Wrapped jalapeno poppers or bacon wrapped

water chestnuts with a maple syrup glaze. Yummy!

10. Quesadillas and the different side ingredients.

11. Cheese dips or cheese balls. Crackers or bread

sticks are good, along with those tortilla chips.

12. Chicken Wings! With sauces on or on the side.

I like mild Frank’s Hot Sauce prepared in a pan with

a tablespoon or so of butter, then each piece dipped

and baked. Once out of the oven, a good blue cheese

dressing with celery sticks to “cool” off your mouth

served on the side.

maybe with protein and/or your needed ‘after drinking

remedy.’

Titillating News from Cleveland, Ohio

My Mom, warmed up from a visit with my brother, Rich, and a nice

dinner of prime rib, sat in her pajamas and told me a rather exciting

story. She and I had our second juice glass apiece of her favorite wine,

Sangria and I had a blanket wrapped around my legs pulled up to listen.

She said, “Why not title this, ‘What does love have to do with sex?'” She

showed me an article about the Cleveland Museum of Natural History

that got her creative juices flowing and her need to provide ‘fodder’ for

my blog.

Here is my Mom’s recent shared story for one and all!

“I am embarrassed to tell you this, but think it will show that in the ‘olden

days’ we still talked, thought about and engaged in racy behaviors! I was

a teacher in Middletown, Ohio and met a nice man who worked on my

car. He owned and worked in a car service garage. He told me while I was

getting my oil changed that he was saving up to move out to Montana and

own a horse farm. I was very interested in his story, since he was a very nice

and handsome man around my age of 24 years old. He had inherited some

money, had opened a loan at the bank and was doing what he had learned

from his grandfather and father, how to repair and service cars. He asked

me if I wanted to “date” and I gave him my parents’ home phone number.

He was an upstanding citizen who was well known in my small town. I did

not worry about his behavior and knew he would be a fun man to date. At

this time, your father had graduated from UC’s engineering program and

was up in Cleveland, writing letters but I was not engaged.

On our first date, Harry came and picked me up at the door, he met my

parents and shook your grandpa’s hand. He and I headed off to eat at a

local diner and on our way home, he drove to his garage, place of business

and we went into the garage in one of the service areas and got out to get

the garage door pulled down. We sat in his car and made out.”

I stopped her, “On your first date, Mom?!” I used a rather incredulous voice,

since she and my Dad had been very adamant during my high school and

college days, NEVER to kiss on the first dates!”

Her answer was, “Well, Robin, there was no time to waste! I had to decide by

November, when your Dad would come to see me and my parents for our

Thanksgiving meal.”

Hmmm…. different take on my Mom, and wondered for a moment. I still don’t

kiss on any first dates!!

Mom continued, “We did this every Fri. or Sat. once a week from September until

November 15th or through half the month. Each time, we would engage in sexual

escapades above the waist. I will tell you Harry was hairy. But, no below the waist

foreplay or fondlings. We were not making big dates, just simple dinners, no movies

nor plays. I told him I wished we could go to the theater and he said it was too late

in the summer to go to the drive-in.”

I interrupted the flow of her story, to ask her a question, “Why did you feel you wanted

to do this with him? Didn’t it feel weird, weren’t there lights on? Why didn’t you go to

a forest or park?”

Mom looked at me, like I was crazy, “Police would have taken their flashlights and may

have interrupted our nice times of cuddling and it warmed me up a lot.”

She finished this three months of enjoying the pleasure of a handsome man who did

give her some satisfaction, but I pictured his really wanting to go farther, too. I asked,

“Did he ever say, ‘Let’s go to a motel’ or ‘Maybe we could take this farther somewhere

else?'”

Mom again, looking nonplussed, “Why, he knew I was a lady! We would do this for about

an hour, then Harry would take me home. I suppose it did take a lot of restraint on his

part…”

I asked, “Did Dad know you were dating someone while he was far away?”

She answered, “I did not tell him, nor did I ask what he did in his spare time!”

She did finish the story saying that two years later, she was married and expecting me,

her first baby. She was at a public gathering, she is not sure if it was political or one

her parents had invited her and Dad to. The man, Harry, walked in. She said, “I looked

across the room and spied him. He looked back at me, he looked downward at my

expanding belly, I was really showing you then! He walked over and put his hands out

reaching my shoulders. He looked into my eyes, I looked into his eyes. I could see regret

and I felt a little sad, too. Robin, he never said there was a future, he never took it beyond

making out in a car with food beforehand. How would I know he wanted me for something

more permanent?”

This is her story that she thought you would all be fascinated with. I was very interested

but am not sure how it will be received.

I did want to add details about a recent exhibit titled, “Nature’s Mating Games: Beyond

the Birds and the Bees.” It is a shared or joint exhibit with the London Natural History

Museum, being held at Cleveland Museum of Natural History. It is rated “PG-13!” It is

so interesting to read about, I had to share! The language in the exhibit is labeled,

“Frank.” The images are called, “Graphic!” The whole show is an extra $5 and is called,

“provocative!”

One example of wit and humor, “What Does Love Have to Do with Sex?” inspired my

Mom’s recent (above) revelation. It has the juxtaposition of a British firefighter’s helmet

and a pair of steep stiletto-heeled shoes.

Mom’s final remark on the subject, arrived this morning over our breakfast of almond

crusted cinnamon buns, oatmeal with brown sugar, butter and raisins, with a juice

glass of tomato juice and coffee:

“Heavens, Robin! A few glasses of Sangria and I spilled my guts. I just hope you will

tell your fellow bloggers, that I never drank on my dates. I found out from your Dad

that if I had a stiff whiskey sour, I went below the waist!”

Ta-Dah!
